DEMING, NM. - Virginia Jackson , Joe Tagliano and
Floyd and Shirley Jones flew to Deming, NM. this weekend for
"The World's Richest Duck Race" at Elder Downs and
boy, are their wings tired! Sorry about the wise quack!
There were 432 ducks from Tennessee,
Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Minnesota entered with
$1,500 in prizes.
The Durangotangs stayed at the
Holiday Inn in Deming where accommodations were available for
both owners and ducks. There were duck pens in back of the
motel and trial training pens on the grounds.
People promoting the event from Deming were on "Good
Morning America", and the race was televised on "The
Rich Little Show".
Both Vallecito Duck, sponsored by
Virginia's Steakhouse and Durango Duck, sponsored by
Timberline View Estates, were entered in the races Saturday
afternoon. Zsa Zsa Duck (Virginia) was a contestant in the
"Duck Queen Contest" Saturday night at the big Duck
Ball at the Holiday Inn in Deming.

One of the qualifications for the queen contest was to
know how to waddle well. Virginia does not have webbed feet,
but thought fish net hose would fit the bill instead. She wore
a specially made yellow feathered costume from Albuquerque
decorated with rhinestones and sequins. Rhinestone studded
eyeglasses completed the outfit.
The duck track in Deming is two feet
by three feet wide and 17 feet long. The lanes are separated
by chicken wire (they could have at least called it poultry
wire). The owners and trainers are not allowed to touch their
ducks during the race, but they can urge the duck along
with hand clapping, foot stomping, shouting, etc. Any part of
the duck that crosses the finish line first wins whether it be
the quacker, tail feathers, wing tip, etc.
